Cancer Genetics

Mass General Cancer Center at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital

Advanced Gene Testing

You may have an increased risk of developing cancer or a particular medical syndrome based on your personal or family history.

Our Program for Cancer Genetics, in association with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Cancer Risk Assessment (CCRA), provides evaluation, counseling, and testing to help understand your risk. Consultations are provided virtually, expanding ease of access and availability to our patients.

A certified genetic counselor will help you better understand your specific medical and genetic information, and how it is relevant to you and your family.

Consideration of genetic testing is recommended for individuals whose personal and/or family history includes:

  • Cancer diagnosed at younger ages than usual (e.g. breast cancer below age 50)
  • Multiple biological relatives diagnosed with cancer
  • Individuals diagnosed with more than one primary cancer
  • Rare or unusual cancer types
  • Individuals diagnosed with bilateral cancer of paired organs

Cancer risk assessment offers personalized information, including referral for ongoing treatment, monitoring and follow-up for hereditary cancers and tumors such as:

  • Breast
  • Ovarian, uterine and fallopian tube
  • Colon, rectal, pancreatic and gastric
  • Kidney
  • Thyroid, pituitary and adrenal
  • Melanoma

Some of the cancer predisposition syndromes for which we offer testing include:

  • BRCA1/BRCA2-related breast and ovarian cancer syndrome
  • Lynch syndrome
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and MUTYH-Associated polyposis (MAP)
  • Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC)
  • Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL)
  • Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)
  • Cowden syndrome (CS)
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN1 and MEN2)
